China Clay Hood Wagon Information

The BR fleet of China Clay Hood Wagons were built in the 1950’s to replace the original GWR design. The wagons were used to transport china clay mainly from the West Country to the potteries. The distinctive pale blue hoods were fitted to prevent ingress of rain and the china clay dust blowing all over the place. Pictures of working wagons invariably showed them covered in white dust. There are several wagons in preservation and an example can be seen at the National Railway Museum
