Class 24 Frequently Asked Questions

What do you get in a Class 24 kit?

The kit comes with all the parts you need to build your own Class 24. A one piece GRP body shell, two sheets of etched nickel detailing parts, folded steel chassis finished in Black powder coat, two steel buffer beams, sprung steel buffers and clevis couplings. Two built bogies with motors and gears fitted, laser cut steel bogie detailing. iDrive 180 amp digital controller with remote handset and a comprehensive illustrated building manual along with a running and maintenance manual and of course a 12 month warranty.

How long will it run on one battery charge?

With two 44Ah batteries the Class 24 will run for around 5 hours depending on track conditions and load.

Can you use it on a ground level garden railway?

We have run a Class 24 on a ground level railway with 14ft radius curves, it will go round tighter radii but you will need to allow enough clearance for the body to overhang.

How many passengers will it pull?

The Class 24 will comfortably haul 2-3 passenger cars with 8-12 passengers depending on track conditions.

Can you advise on paint colours?

The build manual lists the paint colour codes and advice on painting

I have never built an electric loco, how easy is it to wire the motors etc?

We make up a fully terminated wiring loom and install it on the chassis, you will need to attaché the batteries and plug in the remote handset, everything else is fitted.

How long will it take to build the Kit?

The bogies are built and just need the detailing parts bolted in place. The wiring loom is pre-made and can be fitted in less than an hour. The main part of the work is in the body shell which will need the window apertures cut out (the etched-nickel window frames make this an easy and straightforward task). The whole build will take around 40 hours but you will have to allow extra time for the paint to dry!
